Community Awareness Education Programs
One of the most successful ways to prevent domestic violence and sexual assault is to educate our community. Operation Care has developed a comprehensive education and awareness program, reaching out to all areas of the population:
No-Bullying Program for elementary schools
We teach young students how to recognize bullying behaviors in themselves and others and what to do when they experience or witness bullying or inappropriate touching. This program contains a school survey and a teacher component that helps the adults at school to provide consistent consequences for bullying behaviors. In this program they also learn about safe and healthy touching. As quoted by one of our staff: “It is pure joy to be out in our community and see the students that we had in our classes come up to us and call us the No-Bully Ladies. They are always there to tell us their stories and to tell us how they were able to stop a bullying behavior.”
Teen Dating Violence
Teen relationships can be just as abusive as adult relationships. Our prevention workshops focus on topics such as Drug facilitated sexual assaults, sexual harassment on school grounds, self destructive behaviors, and gender role stereotyping. This program contains a variety of activities including a mock rape trial where each jury must reach a verdict after deliberations.
Intimate Partner Violence
This is a one-hour presentation to high school students, discussing the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship, and the cycle of violence. We teach the students about types of intimate partner violence including physical, sexual, verbal, emotional, and mental abuse. The class also includes sexual assault and what to do if you are raped, ending with a few role-playing scenarios.
Chrysalis
Our agency created a series of workshops with a focus on teenage girls that are currently in the foster care system. The workshops deal with various issues related to rape prevention and instills the knowledge they will need to keep themselves safe and healthy in their personal relationships. It also includes self esteem tools to build confidence in young women.
Workshops for the Developmentally Disabled
We hold a weekly workshop for developmentally disabled participants. The sessions include no-bullying, safe and healthy touching, dating relationships, sexual assault and rape prevention, and healthy boundaries.
Correctional Facilities
We have educational programs at Pine Grove Youth Camp, Mule Creek State Prison and Preston Youth Authority. Our presentations focus on the ripple effects of sexual abuse. During the workshops, participants begin to share their own personal stories, and relate their own experience to the subject.
Self Defense
This is an 8-hour hands-on workshop where students learn awareness and basic self defense moves. Modified versions are available for disabled or senior participants.
Making the Peace
This is a 15-week course including basic anger management tools. The program also covers self-esteem, gender roles, communication, and negotiation skills.
